Fifteen Years Behind The Chair

I started cutting hair over fifteen years ago and spent most of that time in busy shops — the kind where you're measured on how many heads you get through in a day.

You learn a lot that way. You also learn what gets lost. The consultation gets shorter. The finish gets rushed. You stop knowing your clients' hair because you never see the same person twice in a row.

Black Oak is the shop I opened in 2025 to work the other way. One chair, by appointment, one client at a time. It means I see fewer people in a day — and it means the people I do see get the whole appointment, every time.

Most of my work is men's cuts and beard work. Most of my clients come back every three or four weeks, and after the first couple of visits they don't have to tell me anything. That's the point of the whole thing.

In Practice

What One-At-A-Time Actually Means

Nobody Is Waiting On You

There's no one in a chair behind you and no one in a waiting room in front of you. The appointment runs as long as the work takes.

The Same Hands Every Time

You're not reassigned to whoever's free. After the first visit, your cut is on record and in my head.

A Room, Not A Floor

Private room, good chair, something to drink. It's a different forty-five minutes than you're used to.
